Flooring Cost Calculator
- Best for
- Homeowners · DIY installers · Small contractors
- When to use
- When you are comparing flooring options or checking whether an installation quote makes sense for your room size.
How this calculator works
Flooring is sold by area, but you always need a little more than the room measures. The calculator adds your waste allowance to the material you order, while labor is priced on the actual floor area.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Floor area | length × width (or the total area you typed) |
| Square feet to order | area × (1 + waste %), rounded up |
| Materials | order sq ft × (flooring + underlayment price) + extras |
| Labor | area × (installation + removal price) |
| Range | total ± the spread you pick |
Assumptions you should know
- Waste needs depend on the product and layout. Straight-lay planks in a simple rectangle need less; diagonal tile, herringbone or rooms with lots of corners need more. Ask the store or the installer what allowance they recommend for your product.
- Flooring is often sold by the box. After you get the square feet to order, divide by the coverage printed on the box and round up.
- The default prices are illustrative placeholders, not market data. Replace them with prices from your supplier and written quotes.
- Subfloor repair, leveling, moving appliances and stair work are not included unless you add them as extras.
Tip: For an irregular room, split it into rectangles, add their areas together and type the total into “Or total area”.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Most people add a waste allowance for cuts and mistakes, often around 5–15% depending on the room shape, the material and the pattern. Check the manufacturer's recommendation for your product.
Does flooring cost include removing the old floor?
Not always. Removal and disposal are often priced separately, so this calculator has its own line for them.
Are the default prices real market prices?
No. The defaults are illustrative placeholders. Enter prices from your supplier and installer quotes.
